Donated Health Care Products Will Help Expand Access to Care for Underserved Seniors in San Diego
San Diego, CA – March 6, 2018 – The nonprofit Gary and Mary West Senior Dental Center announced today that it has received a donation of health care products under a grant from the Henry Schein Cares Global Product Donation Program in partnership with the California Dental Association Foundation’s Dental Materials and Supplies Grant. Through this program, Henry Schein, Inc., the world’s largest provider of health care products and services to office-based dental practitioners, provides recipient organizations with several health care product donations valued between $5,000 and $25,000 over the course of two years.
The grant will enable the Gary and Mary West Senior Dental Center to more effectively carry out its mission and expand its ability to provide care to low-income seniors in downtown San Diego. Henry Schein Cares aims to expand access to health care for underserved and at-risk populations around the world by promoting wellness, prevention, treatment and education; providing emergency preparedness and relief; and building health care capacity.

Each day we see the impact that providing desperately needed oral healthcare has on seniors’ ability to eat, speak, and smile,” said Karen Becerra, DDS, MPH, CEO and Dental Director of the Gary and Mary West Senior Dental Center. “Receiving these supplies will allow us to treat even more patients and continue to transform seniors’ lives. We thank Henry Schein Cares and the California Dental Association Foundation for joining our efforts to restore the oral health of low-income seniors.”
The 1,400-square foot Gary and Mary West Senior Dental Center (photos) is located inside Serving Seniors’ Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center, where seniors not only have access to high-quality, affordable oral healthcare, but also to a suite of nutrition, care management, housing and social services. Through its innovative care model, the Gary and Mary West Senior Dental Center offers high-quality, affordable oral healthcare with comprehensive education, health and wellness services. By navigating the Denti-Cal system on behalf of their patients, and using a sliding-fee scale for non-covered procedures, seniors can access a dental home that is co-located in a familiar and trusted setting, creating a seamless community-based system of care for older adults.
